Associate Director, Technology, Media and Telecoms (Brussels)

Global Counsel (GC) is seeking an Associate Director to support its established Technology, Media and Telecoms Practice in Brussels. The role provides the opportunity to work with a range of international clients, including some of the most prestigious companies and investors in the technology space.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a curious mind-set who can be a trusted adviser to businesses and investors. They will aptly draw from their experience in business, EU institutions and/or other relevant previous roles to provide practical strategic advice and support on digital policy developments in the EU, delivering at pace to meet client needs.
Role and responsibilities
- Provide expert, strategic and actionable advice to GC clients on the risks and opportunities connected to digital policy.
- Be point of contact with clients and lead on account management, delivering client work from inception to conclusion (and overseeing others’ work). This includes translating complex policy and converting political and regulatory developments into accessible analysis for clients sitting across the corporate ladder. The candidate is also expected to develop cutting edge thought leadership pieces; provide advice on innovative approaches to public policy engagement; and guidance on political strategies.
- Support the Technology, Media and Technology practice and GC’s senior leadership in developing and executing business development campaigns and pitch processes.
- Line management of junior colleagues, providing support to a talented team sitting across GC global offices.
- Build and maintain a network of contacts among policymakers and wider stakeholders at senior levels.
Skills and profile
- 8-10 years’ experience working on telecom, media and technology issues in consultancy, trade body, corporate office, EU institution or think tank. Specific knowledge of EU cybersecurity and/or data policy is a strong asset.
- Good understanding of the drivers and processes of policymaking and decision-making in the EU, knowledge of policymaking at the national level will be a plus.
- Excellent analytical and research skills. Ability to obtain a solid overview of new and complex subject matter in a short period of time. Drive for analytical rigour and quality.
- A driven self-starter who works well independently and as part of a team.
- Good project management, organisational and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritise, plan and schedule tasks proactively and independently. Comfortable working under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Outstanding oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex issues to non-specialists.
- Previous experience in directly managing individual employees or teams.
- Excellent written English and ability to convert complex concepts into accessible language that has clarity and impact for internal and external audiences with varying degrees of expert knowledge. Knowledge of other EU languages is a plus.
