Global Counsel is seeking an Associate to support our established Technology, Media & Telecoms (TMT) practice in Brussels. The role provides the opportunity to work with a range of international clients, including some of the most prestigious companies and investors in the technology space. It offers exposure to a variety of high-profile policy challenges and opportunities facing companies in the sector, from the introduction of new competition and content moderation rules for platforms to Europe’s efforts to achieve ‘strategic autonomy’ in semiconductors and cloud.
The role
▪ Monitor and analyse evolving political and regulatory developments in EU technology and telecoms policy at both the Commission and member state level, including ongoing policy debates on AI and copyright, child protection online, the expected Digital Fairness Act and Digital Networks Act, and the implementation of the Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act.
▪ Identify, map and prioritise key stakeholders across the EU institutional landscape, and provide tactical and strategic advice on advocacy and engagement to clients.
▪ Build and maintain relationships with clients and a wider network of businesses and policymakers. You will work with colleagues across different practices and offices, including London, Berlin, & Washington DC, as well as partners around Europe.
▪ Support the design and delivery of workshops and events, including policy deep-dives, roundtables and panel discussions.
▪ Produce original written content, including policy papers, published blogs, progress reports and marketing material, to build your own profile and that of Global Counsel in Brussels.
▪ Support business development by researching potential clients and creating material promoting GC’s TMT offer.
▪ Act as an active ambassador for Global Counsel at relevant industry and policy events, and invest in developing the skills, expertise and reputation of yourself and others.
Skills profile
▪ We want people who have a keen interest in understanding the political and reputational drivers of policymaking in Brussels. Someone who can delve into the detail of legislative proposals and read between the lines of policy statements while building their own network of experts to draw on for insight.
▪ Curiosity and intellectual energy are critical for this role. You will take a proactive approach to anticipating the future policy agenda, identifying challenges and opportunities and delivering solutions for clients.
▪ Strong writing skills are a must; you will be confident about writing informative and engaging briefings for senior decision makers at the highest levels of business, as well as publishing under your own name.
▪ The successful candidate will likely have 1-3 years' experience working on EU policy and regulation, ideally in one of the EU institutions, a national government, a public affairs agency, a trade body, a multinational business, a think-tank, or the non-profit sector.
▪ Prior experience in technology policy is an advantage.
▪ Fluent spoken and written English-language; additional European languages are an advantage.
